NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen recently addressed an international conference on women, peace and security in Brussels, elaborating on what the Alliance has done and plans to do to help protect and empower women. On the occasion of International Women’s Day on 8 March, join our live video discussion online at(CET) on NATO’s efforts to help implement the United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 on Women, Peace and Security. Adopted on 31 October 2000, UNSCR 1325 calls on states and international organisations to actively protect women and children from violence in armed conflicts, prosecute sexual war crimes, mainstream a gender perspective into peacekeeping operations, improve specialised training, support local women’s peace initiatives and enhance the role of women in decision-making on peace and security. 16.00 Three experts will share their views and respond to your queries: Mr. Terje Hagen, Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Human Resources, who is responsible for NATO’s gender and diversity policy; Mrs. Laurie Muir, Staff Officer in the Political Affairs and Security Policy Division, who chairs the NATO Task Force on UNSCR 1325; and Brigadier General Jan Peter Spijk, who has been actively involved in this issue at Allied Command Operations. The session will be moderated by Dr. Stefanie Babst, NATO’s Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Public Diplomacy.
