Romania will join the missile system. The decision was taken today in the CSAT meeting, following the invitation coming from the United States. Terrestrial interceptor of the missile system will be placed in our country announced President Traian Băsescu after the CSAT meeting.

CSAT has approved the U.S. proposal for Romania to join the missile shield. The decision was taken in the CSAT emergency meeting convened today, by President Traian Băsescu. "The invitation for Romania to participate in the development of U.S. missile defense system was launched by U.S. President Barack Obama, via U.S. Secretary of State for arms control, Ellen Tauscher," said Traian Băsescu.  Head of state said that "Romania will be placed as part of terrestrial interceptor missile system.  Traian Băsescu said that the missile system is one of high importance to the allies and comes to address concerns from new types of threats.  "The old location of the system covered only a small part in the west of the country. The new location covers the whole territory of Romania," Basescu said. The President was keen to clarify that a system against Russia will not be installed in Romania.

"The new system is not aimed against Russia, but against other threats.  "In the next period there will be initiated bilateral negotiations with the United States for the conclusion of an agreement. The Romanian Parliament will be the one to approve the agreements. The decision we took is extremely important in strengthening the partnership with the United States. But the most important thing is that this decision and operational systems greatly increase the security systems of Romania. It is the biggest win that we have. Romania was not equipped against possible ballistic missile attacks," said Traian Băsescu. Missile defense is a system that is designed to detect, track, intercept and destroy enemy missile offensive. It was originally designed as a protection against intercontinental ballistic missiles with nuclear warheads, but today they include medium /short-range missile defense with conventional warheads.
